The Best Supplements for Histamine Intolerance: My Top Picks for Symptom Relief

If you’re dealing with histamine intolerance, you already know how challenging it can be to manage.

From unexpected food reactions to digestive discomfort, histamine overload can turn everyday foods and environments into a minefield.

While addressing the root causes of histamine intolerance—such as gut health or nutrient deficiencies—is key, there are several supplements that can offer relief by supporting the body’s ability to process histamine.

Quercetin helps to stabilise mast cells, which are the cells that release histamine during allergic reactions. It also has the added benefit of being a strong antioxidant.

How it helps: By reducing the release of histamine from mast cells, quercetin can help lower overall histamine levels in the body, making it an excellent daily supplement for those with chronic histamine issues.

When to use: Quercetin can be taken daily to prevent histamine release, or as needed during allergy seasons or when exposed to high-histamine foods or environments.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is not only a powerful antioxidant but also a natural antihistamine. It works by degrading excess histamine in the body and has been shown to reduce blood histamine levels, making it an essential supplement for those with histamine intolerance.

Probiotics

  • Bifidobacterium longum

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus

DAO (Diamine Oxidase) Enzyme Supplements

DAO supplements are a go-to for many people with histamine intolerance. DAO is the enzyme responsible for breaking down histamine in the gut.

In those with histamine intolerance, low levels of DAO are often the reason histamine builds up and causes symptoms.

How it helps: Taking a DAO supplement before meals can assist in breaking down histamine from food, preventing or reducing symptoms like headaches, bloating, or hives.

When to use: DAO is best taken 15 minutes before meals that may contain higher histamine levels (think fermented foods, aged cheese, or cured meats. I also take it with the occasional cheeky glass of wine).

Lamb Kidney is also high in DAO and is an effective way of breaking down histamine from foods. Not only do we want to support histamine metabolism but it is also important to lower the histamine burden by detoxing and excreting histamine from the body. This product has truly been a revelation on my personal journey and for my clinical practice.

The most effective way to restore histamine balance is by implementing a multi pronged approach, which entails a variety of treatment options. When we do this we manage histamine so much more effectively.

The sooner we can lower our histamine load the quicker symptoms will resolve and we become less reactive to foods. These components help to heal the gut lining, reduce intestinal permeability (leaky gut), and support the immune system.
